What's a tabletop RPG?

A tabletop role playing game (TTRPG) is a group game for usually 2 or more players. One player assumes the role of story teller who tells the story, and speaks for the world the other players encounter. The others make characters to represent themselves in that story. In-game rewards and character growth progression are recorded on a character record sheet.

About Mystica Eterna

Terrene is world of untamed wilds: giant animals and insects, cryptid beasts, hostile plants and dangerous lands. The planet is young, hazardously rich in oxygen with lands that range from temperate and fungal forests, swamps, nearly impassible mountains, to lush grasslands, and rocky jagged plains. The high levels of oxygen means that fires can easily start, flare up, and spread faster and hotter than imaginable; Forcing evolution and coping mechanisms in all beings on Terrene.

Because the world is so hostile, high walled cities are a bastion for civilized life. However, some creatures have evolved to live alongside people either symbiotically where both sides can benefit like with gremlins. Commensal, like how large urban rat-like critomy are continually ignored. Even parasitic, like in the case of areanae who, once large enough inhabit entire apartments, creating a single defendable entrance in a window, often on higher floors, and hunt humans at night.

It's not all strife, Terrens, the people of Terrene, all poses the potential to use mystica. Mystica is an innate energy emitted from the body and harnessed in health, sound, and light powers. Mystica use is licensed and governed. Training is through a clergy-like organization called the Mystics and a stand-alone government group called Hunters polices its use.

The hyper-oxygenated atmosphere prevents progress or stagnates technology growth in areas like internal combustion, firearms, or advanced metallurgy. Making aluminum the greatest and most expensive alloy available and changing the direction technology is taking when compared to Earth.

The technology and the setting are similar to the 1920s, though the technology is early 1900's utilizing the energy from people for power rather than a network of electricity or using batteries. Only contact with a flashlight is required to power it. This allowed for some small advances in light-based and electricity based ranged weapons, but at the expense of traditional firearm development. Because firearms were never invented, advance personal protection comes in the form of armor, leather, chain mail, plate and even shields. Archaic weapons are used alongside newer energy weapon; both used with great effectiveness. Nearly everything is made to be lasting and sturdy, often with wood and steel construction.

Due to the lack of internal combustion engines, the average city-dweller commutes by foot or bicycle. Though large flightless birds called Vorombe are a common animal mount, or a type of giant slow moving lizard called Priano for heavier loads. Travel outside of walled cities, or lands where creatures have been pushed back is dangerous and should always be taken with great consideration and planning. Though hardened lawless elements and grizzled wilderness ranger types do perfectly well.

Each country has their own agenda, political standing, and potential for political intrigue. Organizations are outlined like The Mystics, Hunters, Obelisk, Mystitech Mystimite Technologies (MMT), Unified Governance Commission (UGC), and Global Waste Management (GWM).

The game rules, rolling system, character building, and character advancement are all as simple as can be. The ruleset grants true decision freedom and the reward system fosters realistic problem solving.

Traditional TTRPGs reward specific in-game behavior, like killing monsters for experience and loot. The result of incentivizing in-game behavior drives meta-game decision for a players action. Experience for killing not only highlights death as a solution to everything, but the tough combatant, Korg, will always seek out combat rather than use problem solving to resolve a given situation.

Traditional leveling and class systems create a power imbalance where sudden leaps in power happen and one class is more powerful at a given level than another. By linking rewards to in-game actions also means that some players may not be present to be rewarded when others are. This creates a rift between player capabilities and the weaker character is at a disadvantage.

Easy to Master and Less Time Commitment

Quick to learn, easy to master. Dive right into the action. Other pen and paper games can be time-consuming and complex, often limiting the storytelling to a single individual. This can mean a long time between sessions, eventual burnout, and scheduling difficulties. Our simple ruleset lets anyone take the reins and weave their own narrative. Quick setup, no reward calculation, and with shorter play sessions of about 2 to 4 hours, create rich and rewarding experiences without extra time commitment.

By rewarding the play session itself, it incentivizes joining friends to play the game, regardless of great or lackluster achievement during play. The rewards are also dynamically chosen by the player rather than a static pool of points that provide pre-determined reward after reaching a threshold. This incremental improvement is more rewarding and the reward system allows for greater character customization. As everyone is rewarded in the same way, power imbalances don't occur. Since the improvement is incremental, and the way the rolling system works, missing play sessions doesn't significantly impact a character's group power balance.

Extensive Character Customization

As in reality, a character's (or proxy's) growth is constant and never ending. Incremental improvement per gameplay session lead to greater attributes, skills, and powers. Milestones provide steady points of customization. Fully design your character, be passive with no combative ability, a huge brute with all the combative ability, a tech wiz, a sniper with a laser rifle, a stealthy bow woodsman, a charismatic artist who boosts their friends with words of encouragement, or mystica mancer who heals or harms with a touch, just to name a few. All with a route to retrain in case you change your mind on your path of development.
